It is also known as HM01, the corresponding HM device of this move, which is must be obtained from the S.S. Anne quest.
Functionality
In battle
Cut inflicts damage and has no secondary effect.
Out of battle

Cut can be used to cut specific trees, removing them from the way. The usage of this move outside of combat does not require the Pokémon knowing the move to have Happiness. Most Cut trees are either blocking an item or can be cut down to open a shortcut. However, there are a few story-mandatory locations that are isolated by a Cut tree. Hoenn is the only region that does not require the player to use Cut.
The Tree Axe functions identically to Cut and can be used simply from having the item in the player's bagpack, removing the need to carry a Pokémon knowing Cut. However, the player is still required to own HM01 as well as the region's required badge to use the Tree Axe.
In order to use either Cut or the Tree Axe, the player is required to have the following badge depending on his or her current region:
- Kanto: Cascade Badge (Cerulean City)
- Johto: Hive Badge (Azalea Town)
- Hoenn: Stone Badge (Rustboro City)
- Sinnoh: Coal Badge (Oreburgh City)
Learnset
HMs
