Stark Mountain is a Sinnoh volcano located north of Route 227. It is divided into multiple areas, however only the first two areas, Exterior and Entrance, are accessible until its local quest is taken.
Being home to Heatran, the quest will allow the player not only to meet Heatran, but also to catch it. Due to that, high conditions are in place before the player can start the quest.

Heatran Quest
Entry into Main Cavern Pt
Buck will be blocking the north exit in Entrance Pt. He will not less the player any further in until the following conditions have been fulfilled:
- The Sinnoh Elite Four has been completed.
- The player has at least 150 hours of playtime since starting the Sinnoh region. This can be confirmed by talking to Rowan in Sandgem Town.
- The player has only one Pokémon on hand, which is level 60 or less.
Because of the last condition, it is recommended to train a Pokémon specifically for the quest. Popular choices are Gyarados, Snorlax and Garchomp. Furthermore, to make sure it does not gain anymore level, it is recommended to defeat all the trainers on the way to Stark Mountain with different Pokémons.
Once the player enters the Main Cavern, all Master Balls and Rare Candies will be taken away from the player. They are returned after leaving the cave, or completing the quest. Other items such as Potions and Pokéballs are not taken, and as such it is also recommended to stock onto a good ammount of every usable item.
While inside, wild Pokémons can be fought and captured. As such, it is possible to catch a few extra Pokémons so that reviving the main Pokémon is possible should it ever faint. All Pokémons will also gain experience from defeating wild Pokémons and trainers, meaning it is also a wise idea to train a little against wild Pokémons. However, once the player's Pokémon raises to level 61, returning into the cave with that Pokémon will no longer be possible should the player leave.
Main Cavern
Upon entering Main Cavern Pt, there will be a short event with Buck and the culprits of the commotion in Stark Mountain. Those culprits will disappear, and Buck will stay behind.
Buck will heal the player's Pokémons when talking to him, making it useful for safely leveling up before going against any of the trainers.
Trainers inside Main Cavern have custom movesets. As such, their Pokémons can learn moves they don't learn by level up, such as Psychic Sterling's Grumpig knowing Charge Beam, a move players that chose Gyarados will have to be careful of.
There are also many Rock Smash rocks, which are necessary to break in order to reach certain trainers and items. Although it is not necessary to break any, it is recommended to bring a Pick Axe to be able to pass through and gain needed levels by fighting all the trainers.
The next destination is the next room, Stark Mountain Heatran Pt, which is located in the center north of Main Cavern. There will however be a Galactic Grunt that will be blocking the way, with a full party of 6 Pokémons around level 70.
Heatran room
After defeating the grunt and entering Heatran's room, the same NPCs that were at the entrance of the Main Cavern will be there again. Before talking to Commander Mars, Buck will heal the player's Pokémons by talking to him. It is recommended to do so between every battle happening in this room.
Commander Mars will challenge the player after talking to him. His Pokémons are estimated to be level 75 and don't reward any money nor experience.

Once the fight is over, the next thing to do is to speak and defeat Heatran, without forgetting to heal at Buck beforehand. Heatran will be level 99, and capturable. However, it is not recommended to capture it during this battle, as not only the Master Balls are still missing, applying Synchronize to get the correct nature is not possible unless the Pokémon the player brought into Stark Mountain is the desired Synchronize Pokémon. There will be a second chance, so it is highly recommended to concentrate on defeating the level 99 Heatran.
Once defeated, Buck will take the player out of the cave, completing the quest. Master Balls and Rare Candies will be returned to the player, and it will be possible to reenter the deeper areas without any restriction. However, a level 30 Heatran will have appeared in the Heatran room. This is the opportunity to return to the Pokémon Center and bring the desired Synchronize Pokémon as well as all other Pokémons to help with capturing.
Once ready, returning to the Heatran room and talking to the Heatran will trigger a fight with the capturable level 30 Heatran.
