Ecruteak City is a Johto city, serving as an intersection between Route 37, Route 38 and Route 42. However, Route 38 will be blocked until the player has completed the local Gym, and Route 42 will be blocked for longer, requiring Olivine City's Gym to be completed.
On its north are two towers that are related to the local region's legendaries, the Burned Tower and the Bell Tower. Visiting the Burned Tower will be necessary to unlock the Gym. Bell Tower, on the other hand, will require the player to have completed the Johto Elite Four before he or she can enter.
Notable miscellanies
Kimono Girl Quest
When arriving in Ecruteak City for the first time, its Gym is blocked by a police officer. He will say that he is not letting anyone in until the issue at the Ecruteak Dance Theater has been taken care of. Said building is also guarded by a police officer, but will let the player in after hearing that the Gym's police officer sent the player.
Inside the Dance Theater, all there is to do is to talk to the Rocket Grunt, who will then challenge the player. Defeating him will complete the quest. However, the police officer in front of the Gym will still be blocking the way, saying that the Gym Leader is currently in Burned Tower.
The Burned Tower is located in the north-west corner of the city. The Gym Leader will initially be away from his Gym, and the player will need to go search for him in the Burned Tower, making it an important location for the story.
The Bell Tower, located in middle North of Ecruteak City, will be guarded by a Scientist, saying no one is to interrupt during their experiment. He will however let the player pass if he has completed the Johto Elite Four.
The Bell Tower is most known as the location to encounter the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. As such, it will be necessary to visit it in order to complete the Johto Pokédex.
There is an NPC Trader between the Pokémon Center and the Bell Tower that will trade his Xatu for the player's Haunter. The Xatu will be initialized at level 15.
A Move Tutor for the move Dark Pulse is located in the middle of the pond in the north-east corner of the city, needing Surf to reach. He will teach the move to any compatible Pokémon for the price of
15,000.
A Move Tutor for the move Heal Bell is located in the south-east corner of Ecruteak City. She will teach the move to any compatible Pokémon for the price of
16,000.

Ecruteak Gym
The Ecruteak Gym will be blocked by a police officer until both the Kimono Girl quest and the Morty quest in Burned Tower have been completed.
The Gym layout will be once again a simple path, which is perfectly visible unlike in the original games. All three trainers of the Gym will be blocking the path.
Upon defeating Morty, the Gym-greeter will start acting as a Move Tutor, teaching the move Ominous Wind to any compatible Pokémon for the price of
10,000.

Morty
Morty is the Ghost type Gym leader, and likely to be the first challenge of the region. On top of his Pokémon being fully evolved, they also know some powerful moves, most notably: Shadow Ball, which is arguably the best Ghost type move. However, it is to note that Morty does not carry any move to counter the two types that can wall his Shadow Balls, those two being Normal and Dark. As such, Normal and Dark-type Pokémon will be of great help during the fight.
