Spikes is a Ground-type, Status move.
Functionality
Spikes strews spikes throughout the battlefield, thereby precipitating an entry hazard on it. Any Pokémon that switches onto the spikes-pervaded field will sustain damage.
Up to three layers of spikes can be accumulatively set, and the damage output will successively greaten upon each layer; the one, two, and three layers of spikes will inflict 1/8th (12.5%), 1/6th (16.67%), and 1/4th (25%) of the opponent's maximal health, respectively.
Counteractants
Any damage that would have been otherwise sustained by spikes is not inflictible on Flying-type Pokémon, unless that immunity is deneutralized by the Gravity move technique.
The following moves can be used to parry off spikes and neutralize the entry hazard, completely: Rapid Spin, Magic Coat, and Defog.
Additionally, the following abilities will immunize the possessor from any damage inflictions that would have been sustained from spikes, otherwise: Levitate, Magic Bounce, Magic Guard, and Magnet Rise.
Z-Spikes: Raises the user's Defense by 1 stage, then uses Spikes.
