Route 9 is a mountainous Kanto route that is interlocated between Cerulean City and Route 10, serving as a junctional route therebetween.

The area becomes immediately enterable from Cerulean City after obtaining HM05 (Flash) from the S.S. Anne quest; before then, the player's character will balk at entering it due to the understanding that this area is a lead-up to Rock Tunnel—a lightless cave that is not illuminable without the aforementioned HM. In order to deepen access to the route, however, the Thunder Badge must also have been procured from Vermilion Gym; otherwise, Picknicker Alicia will barricade you from progressively traveling through the area.

Due to the occlusive Snorlax at the trisection on Route 12's bridge, players must enter this route as a roundabout travel way to Celadon City for at least their first visit in order to obtain the next badge in Kanto's successional line of Gyms: the Rainbow Badge from Celadon Gym.

The waterway near the route's terminus can be surfed en route to the Power Plant on Route 10.

Notable miscellanies

Ash's Hat

Main article: Ash's Hat (quest)

If you have already encountered Ash Ketchum in Viridian Forest, you can speak to this recurrent character herein.

If you have started with Pikachu, he will enjoin you to do a localized hunt for his hat, which was stolen by one of the ambient Mankey; if you find and return it to him, he will reward you with his own hat—an equippable headwear item that was substantially modeled after Ash's Hat in the anime.

This quest is an inspiratory nod to Episode 25 of the anime wherein a Mankey—the eventual Primeape of Ash—stole Ash's Hat and refused to relinquish it.
