Route 2 is a bisegmental Kanto route that's interlocated between Viridian City and Viridian Forest.

As a junctional route to Pewter City—the first-challengable gym in Kanto's successional line of them—it will be compulsory for players to pass through here to advance to the first gym; this entails traveling through Viridian Forest at that stage, which is an intrahabitat of the route.

The right segment of the Route requires either an on-hand Cut-toting Pokémon or a Hatchet in order to be reachable; it is occluded by trees, otherwise.

Points of interest

Viridian Forest

Main article: Viridian Forest

As a subarea of Route 2, Viridian Forest is at the centerpoint of this area.

Initially, you will need to travel through the sprawling forest in order to traverse through the overarching route. Once HM01 (Cut) and a move-toting Pokémon thereof or the Hatchet have been acquired, the occlusive trees can be cut in order to access the right segment of the area; this provides a shortcut to detour around the Viridian Forest, saving a considerable amount of mileage in order to walk through the route.

Diglett's Cave

Main article: Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave is situated on the right segment of the route.

Once the Thunder Badge has been procured, the cave can be used as an interlocational shortcut between Route 2 and Route 11, thereby providing the most expeditious route to Vermilion City. If a Dig-toting Pokémon with 150-plus happiness points is on-hand, its digway can also be used to bypass the cave's interior pathways, altogether.

NPC Traders

Nidoran-trader

In the northern Viridian Forest stophouse, an NPC trader exists; she will propose trading a Nidoran Male for a Nidoran Female. The traded Nidoran Male will automatically hold a Moon Stone.

Mr. Mime-trader

In the only stophouse on the right segment of the route, an ostensibly prescient Psychic trainer will offer a Mr. Mime in exchange for an Abra.

When accounting for the fact that Mr. Mime is no lower than tier-8 rarity in the wild, this is one of the easiest methods of obtaining it.

Professor Oak's aide

In the only stophouse on the right segment of the route, you will find one of Professor Oak's aides; this one will reward you with HM05 (Flash) contingent that you have 10 caught-data entries registered on your Pokédex.
