Z-Crystals are items which uniquely have the capability to upgrade moves to Z-Moves through the use of a Z-Ring.

Fundamental Facts

  • More than one Pokémon can hold a Z-Crystal in the same battle; however, only one Pokémon can use Z-Move in a battle
  • They can be used even if another Pokémon in the team mega evolves using a Mega Stone
  • Z-Moves bypass accuracy checks to guaranteedly strike, unless the target is in a semi-invulnerable stage of moves such as Dig and Fly
  • Z-Crystals can't be traded or deleted once obtained

Z-Ring

Having the Z-Ring is a prerequisite to obtaining any Z-Crystal. You will not be able to start any quest for one without the Z-Ring in your inventory. To obtain the Z-Ring, you must have access to Trainers Valley. Z-Ring is one of the possible rewards of Mono-Type tournament in Trainers Valley.

Z-Crystals

There are 2 types of Z-crystals: Type specific crystals and Pokémon specific crystals.

Type Specific

  • Type-specific Z-Crystals can be used by any Pokémon as long as it has a damage-dealing move of the type of the Z-Crystal it holds
  • There are a total of 18 type-specific Z-Crystals each for each type
  • Type-specific Z-Moves inherit most attributes (type, category, BP, and PP) from their base moves (e.g., Z-Moves are also physical if the base move is physical)
  • When type-specific Z-Crystals are used on status moves, instead of being upgraded to the damage dealing Z-Move, it adds new effects that make the move slightly better as a one-off

Pokémon Specific

  • Z-Crystals for specific Pokémon can only be used by that particular Pokémon or a Pokémon transformed as it
  • Only one specific base move can be upgraded by each crystal even if it is used by the specified Pokémon
