Sootopolis City is a Hoenn city surrounded by Route 126. However, being completely surrounded by walls, it is necessary to use Dive and enter the city from Route 126 Underwater. In the center north of the city is the entrance to Cave of Origin.
Notable miscellanies
Sky Pillar Quest
When first entering Sootopolis City, going in the far middle-north will trigger an event with Wallace and Steven. After the event, speaking to Steven, he will ask the player to go meet Jackson at Sky Pillar, which is located at Route 131. This will be the final story-driven location of Hoenn.
Once Jackson and Deoxys on the Moon have been defeated, the Hoenn story will be completed after speaking again to Steven, leaving only the local gym and the Elite Four remaining to complete the region. The gym will also now be available to challenge.

Coming Soon.
One of the biregional Move Relearners is stationed in the far north from the Pokemart.
Any move that the player's Pokémon can learn by level up can be relearned at the price of
2,000 via the Move Relearner, at the condition that the Pokémon satisfies the level condition for the desired move. This is helpful to recover a move that was overwritten or that was never learned for various reasons.
Rachel's Friends Quest (Lilliana)
One of the locations the sixth friend of Rachel can be found in is in Sootopolis City's Pokemart. She will trade the player's Potion for a Pokeball.
The next friend to find will be Basuki, who can be found near the end of the region, either at Victory Road Hoenn or Pokemon League Hoenn.
Wild Pokémon
Land
Despite land encounters being shown, no grass or possible land spawn location can be found.

Sootopolis Gym
-
Upper floor with shortest path
-
Lower floor with shortest path
The Sootopolis Gym will be blocked by a police officer until the Sky Pillar Quest has been completed.
Coming back from end-Johto, the gym's layout will be a two-floor sliding puzzle. It will be necessary to keep alternating between the two floors to reach the end.
Another interesting point is that just like Mossdeep City's gym, there are two Gym leaders, Wallace and Juan, which must both be defeated in any order. Although Wallace seems like the most important gym leader due to his appearance in the story, his position makes it most logical to fight him first and receive the badge from Juan instead.
Upon defeating both of the leaders, the access to Victory Road Hoenn will be unlocked. However, the gym-greeter will not sell any TM or teach and move.

Juan
Juan is one of the two gym leaders, both being Water type specialists. Both leaders start with the exact same first three Pokémons, but the two last Pokémons for Juan are Crawdaunt and Kingdra. While Water type Pokémons will have an easier time walling his moves, playing defensively is dangerous if said Pokémon is not over level 85, as two of his Pokémons know an OHKO move. It is a better idea to set-up offensively against his Luvdisc, while preparing a few Antidotes in case it uses Toxic, and then sweep his team using Grass or Electric moves.

Wallace
Wallace is one of the two gym leaders, both being Water type specialists. Both leaders start with the exact same first three Pokémons, but the two last Pokémons for Wallace are Seaking and Milotic. That said, the change of those two Pokémons do not change much in the strategy, and thus once one of them has been defeated, the other should go down with the same strategy.
