Petalburg City is a Hoenn city located between Route 102 and Route 104. Although it is the first city of Hoenn with a gym, the gym will be locked until the 4th badge has been obtained, similar to Kanto's Viridian City. The items and the Move Tutor are also beyond bodies of water, leaving very little to do the first time passing through the city.
Notable miscellanies
Slakoth Trader
In the south-west house is an NPC trader who will trade his Slakoth for the player's Ralts. The Slakoth will be initialized at level 5.
Focus Punch Tutor
A Move Tutor for the move Focus Punch is waiting beyond the water body south-west of the city, which will require Surf to reach. He will teach the move to any compatible Pokémon for the price of 15,000.

Petalburg Gym
Petalburg City's gym will be closed until Lavaridge Town's gym has been completed.
The gym's layout is a "choose your opponent" type of layout. Every room continues on to one or two other rooms, however it is necessary to defeat the trainer before moving ahead. There is, however, a missing door on the room in the far west. As such, it is best to choose the eastern rooms if the player wants to avoid as many trainer as possible.
Upon defeating Norman, the gym-greeter will start selling TM92 (Facade) for the price of 3,500, or for the reduced price of
14,000 for 5 of them. Furthermore, it will be possible to use Surf as well as Fishing rods.

Norman
Norman's team is the same as back in the original games, having only Pokémon of the Normal type family. While his Pokémon, particularly the Slaking, pack a punch, they are easy to play around. Despite having a coverage resisted by no Pokémon, any Pokémon that can create invulnerable turns with moves such as Protect and Fly can guarantee a flawless victory against his two Slaking by making use of their Truant ability, but otherwise it is possible to switch and sacrifice unneeded Pokémon when Slaking is attacking. As for his Vigoroth, it only knows Fighting and Normal moves, making any Ghost type an automatic victory. Else, it usually prefers using Focus Punch, as such, it will easily fall by keeping the offense going.
