Route 42 is a Johto route linking Ecruteak City to Mahogany Town. There are three ways to cross it. The first way is to Surf through the waters, the second way is to cross through Mt. Mortar, the cave that runs all along the route, and the third way is to use Dig on the burrows near the two opposite entrances of that cave.

Notable miscellanies

Mt. Mortar

Main article: Mt. Mortar

Running along Route 42 is Mt. Mortar, with 4 different entrances. The westmost and eastmost entrances are connected together in a straight path, however wandering off that path, or entering the cave from the two middle entrances, the cave will become a maze.

Punch Tutor

A Move Tutor for the three elemental punch moves, Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Thunder Punch, is located in the north-east corner, requiring Rock Climb to reach him. He will teach these moves to any compatible Pokémon for the price of 4,500 each.
